Winter 2012 - Week 3

Hi everyone,

Thanks a lot to everyone who participated in this year's club days and making it such a huge success. We had over 60 new members sign on this year!

I would like to stress to these new members the great opportunity this Wednesday from 4-9pm in the SLC great hall (the large foyer) where we will have a presentation on the basic rules and strategies of go as well as teaching games (this is from 4:00-4:30pm).

Also on February 4th we will be hosting a Go Tournament. There will be many members outside Waterloo who will be attending so it is a great opportunity to test yourself. Entrance to the competition will be charged for serious competitors but should be somewhere around 1-2 dollars and will go to the prizes for the winners and new equipment for the club.
Note: For newer/less experienced players, you don't need to worry about your rank and can participate in a free portion of the tournament. Although there is no prize money, it should help you understand your rank and where you need to improve.

Although many details for the tournament are still being finalized, be sure to check your availability.

Of course, as promised, here is this weeks go problem, alot harder then the last one and should be a challenge even for our high level players (5k-1k). White to kill the marked black stones.

(Hint: Cutting the group from the right is key, start with that then go for the kill) highlight to reveal.

Thanks,

Matt

Winter 2012 - Week 2

Hi Everyone,

Welcome back to another exciting term for the UW Go Club! I, Matthew Longo, and Samriti Mishra, are your new co-presidents this term. Check out this website weekly for new updates on everything from weekly go problems, meetings, useful links and more!

This week:
  • Monday, January 9th from 5:00 - 10:00pm we have our first Go Club meeting of the term, thanks to Joel, in the SLC Great Hall.
  • Wednesday, January 11th from 4:30 - 8:30pm we have our second Go Club meeting at the SLC Great Hall.
  • Thursday and Friday, January 12th and 13th from 10:00am - 3:00pm we have Club Days. We need volunteers for any length of time (minutes, hours, you decide) to keep our booth going for as long as possible. We have Friday pretty well covered so come down to say hi or play a game anytime on those days if you want :)
  •  If you were not sent an email with regards to this information, you are not on the mailing list, send an email to let us know.
  • Official club meetings are still tentative, let us know at the meetings or by email what times work best for you and we'll try to accommodate for all.
This week's go problem, a challenging one for all our high kyu players (24-15), although should still be a brainteaser for everyone, white to live:

If you have any questions, want to volunteer, aren't on the mailing list, or just want the solution to the problem above, email uwgoclub@gmail.com.

Thanks,
Matt

Fall 2011

Hey everyone,

The fall 2011 term is starting and I am back on campus, and so I will be running things again this term. To begin with, some notes:
  • Thanks a lot to Rainie for running the club during the summer. It was a big help.
  • Club fest days are the 22nd and 23rd of September in the SLC. I'd appreciate anybody who can drop by even for a sec to say hi, or if you would like a game, please stop by.
  • Club meeting times still TBA. I'll be booking the rooms soon though.
  • I am making a new mailing list for the club. Please email me sometime this term if you wish to keep getting announcements from the club.
  • I have four new sets of stones :D. I used the money we got from the tournament last May. Thanks to everyone who participated and donated.
  • I would like to try new things out this term such as beginners sessions for any people new to the club, or maybe lectures for kyu players. I would like to try and become more active than we have been in the past.
I hope to see you all soon.

Greg
